The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (often known simply as the SSVP) is an International Christian voluntary organisation dedicated to tackling poverty and disadvantage by providing practical assistance to those in need.

The SSVP conference based in St John the Baptist parish is a long established group, led by laity in the parish.

The group meets weekly in the Church to pray for the work of SSVP, in the parish and around the world, to share experiences from recent visits to the sick and housebound and to plan the coming weeks’ activities.

Members of the St John the Baptist conference regularly visit parishioners who are housebound or in need, in their homes or in hospital. Often a visit is all the person needs but we offer practical support in other ways if that is required.

The conference also responds to specific requests for support from those in need by providing groceries, sourcing furniture or sometimes financial support if that is required.

For some parishioners, the only way they can get to Mass each week is by assisted travel and the conference provide this support for those parishioners requesting it.

Our work in the community is only made possible through the generous and regular support of the parishioners in St John the Baptist. Thank you!
