UK ASSISTED SUICIDE BILL UPDATE

The Lords have agreed to subject the Leadbeater bill to further scrutiny via a Select Committee which will hear evidence from a wide range of witnesses. This is a positive step as the more scrutiny the bill receives the more the dangers associated with this bill will be exposed. The committee is expected to report in early November. Our recent mega letter writing campaign has had an impact with parishioners saying they have had positive replies from most peers. But we need to continue to pray and write to Peers as the bill’s supporters are ramping up their efforts to get the bill passed. SCOTTISH ASSISTED SUICIDE BILL

Members of the ProLife Group visited Holyrood on 7 October along with many other SPUC supporters to lobby MSPs. We now only need 7 additional MSPs to vote against this bill to defeat assisted suicide. In our area 5 of the 7 current MSPs say they remain opposed to the bill. Only Stephanie Callaghan and Monica Lennon voted for the bill. We ask parishioners to contact all their MSPs to continue to express their deep opposition to this bill and lobby the 5 who voted against to continue to oppose the bill. We especially urge parishioners to seek a meeting with Stephanie Callaghan and Monica Lennon to challenge them on their support of a bill contrary to our Christian beliefs and highlight the dangers with this bill. Copies of the SPUC briefing on the McArthur bill are available in the porch and provide an excellent summary of the reasons why all Catholics should be opposed to this bill.
